On May 10th, I had the joy of hosting a collage and flag-making workshop at the Hub in Sleaford. This vibrant event invited community members to explore local folklore and traditions, especially those tied to the summer solstice, in preparation for the upcoming River Light Festival. What unfolded was a unique blend of creativity and storytelling, showcasing the rich cultural essence of our area.
Through discussions and hands-on activities, participants exchanged thoughts and ideas, resulting in stunning flag designs. This workshop served not only as a space for artistic expression but also as a platform to recount traditional stories from a fresh perspective.
Community members of all ages gathered, bringing collage, drawing, and diverse viewpoints to this workshop.
Rediscovering Folklore
Folklore reflects society's values and beliefs at a given moment. It can be enlightening to examine these narratives with modern eyes. For instance, tales about witches traditionally portrayed them as malicious figures, widely feared for bringing curses and misfortune. Today, however, perceptions are shifting. Many now view witches as powerful women connected to nature, promoting healing and personal strength. In some polls, over 60% of younger individuals now express a positive view of witchcraft, seeing it as a celebration of feminine power.
This evolution highlights how folklore transforms alongside society. Workshop participants discussed how these renewed stories could add depth to their flag designs, linking colourful fabrics and patterns to contemporary values that resonate strongly today.

The Summer Solstice Celebration
This year's River Light Festival is set to be an extraordinary celebration, especially as it coincides with the magical summer solstice. On June 21, 2025, the colourful flags created in our workshop will proudly adorn the town, displaying the folklore and stories that emerged during our time together.
Join the Sleaford community in honouring the summer solstice and the power of storytelling. As the flags wave in the breeze, they will serve as vibrant reminders of the strength, creativity, and unity we share.
Explore enchanting tales of our land through these flags, which narrate our collective story. Celebrate with us, and you may find that some customs and traditions can bring you luck throughout the year.
Honouring Collective Identity Through Art
Involving young people in the flag-making process ensures the preservation of our folklore. This engagement nurtures an appreciation for their heritage and inspires them to explore and contribute to these traditions.
As we showcase these flags at the River Light Festival, let’s remember the conversations and connections that birthed them. They transcend mere decoration; they represent our commitment to shaping our community’s identity through shared stories and collaborative creativity.
